A home energy audit is the first step to determine how much energy your home consumes and to evaluate the steps to take to make your home more energy efficient. An audit will show you problems and improvement that can save money and energy over time when corrected.
One way to significantly enhance the effectiveness of a home’s insulation, both conveniently and affordably, is by sealing air leaks in the home. Many buildings that may be well insulated are poorly sealed or had become poorly sealed through remodeling or through age. These leaks cause conditioned air (either heated or cooled air) to escape from the home. This loss of air requires heating and cooling systems to work harder which increases energy bills and affects the comfort of your home.
Many air leaks and drafts are easy to find because you can feel air moving through them, especially around windows and doors. There are many other holes in a home’s exterior that can’t easily be seen such as leaks in attics, basements and crawlspaces. These leaks are typically bigger problems and allow greater amounts of energy to escape. Approximately 60% of all air leaks are in a home’s attic. Add to that the heat loss from an uninsulated basement (as much as 25%) and heat loss from exterior walls (around 15%). This air leakage results in wasted energy, moisture problems in most homes, and wasted money.
